We’ve had the last SofiaDev.org meeting at Dec 22nd, when a bunch of new-comers asked the question “How can I get an online membership at SofiaDev.org?”.

And I don’t have an answer for this one. Because we don’t have online registration. Until now, if you wanted to register, you should have sent me an email. And I don’t receive a lot of registration requests lately.

So I’ve decided to start a pet project, which should handle the user registration process @ SofiaDev.org.

We’re using Sharepoint as a platform for our web site. That’s both publishing announcements and handling documents, such as presentations, pictures from events, etc. We also use the discussions, for handling topics such as “what should be the next meeting’s topic?”, etc.

And now, we need a registration for this one.

So we need the following:

Ability to create user profiles online

Ability to edit user profiles online

Integration with the current system running at our hosting. That’s being provided by BSH, so we need to make sure that we play nice with the rest of the apps on the server.

User profiles based on Windows Sharepoint Services 2 authentication scheme. And that is Active Directory. Currently profiles are being stored in a dedicated OU. Every user that wants to have access to the site, needs to be a member of the SofiaDev Contributors security group.

Ability to extract emails from profiles, so we can automate the email notification thingy. So I want to at least have a way for downloading the list with all active users, as either a text file, or be able to copy it from the site.

And (prev) should be secure. So only members of the admin group should be able to access a designated part of the web site.
